Setting up DNS SRV for redundancy

What is DNS SRV?

A normal DNS record points to one server only (e.g. “sip1.yourdomain.com”). If that server goes down, calls fail.

A DNS SRV record lists multiple servers with priorities, so devices can automatically fail over to the next available server. That’s why it’s essential for redundancy in VoIP.

Setting up with branding

If you’re using custom branding, you’ll need to define the SRV records in the following manner.

_sip._udp.sipsrv.yourdomain.com. IN SRV 10 5 5060 sip1.yourdomain.com.
_sip._udp.sipsrv.yourdomain.com. IN SRV 20 5 5060 sip2.yourdomain.com.

Prerequisite

This assumes you have already set up sip1 and sip2 subdomains pointing to our sip1 and sip2 servers, per the branding guide.

Setting up without branding

If branding or custom DNS isn’t important to you, you can skip creating SRV records entirely and just use BrightPBX’s SRV domain:

sipsrv.brightpbx.ca

This domain is pre-configured with SRV records pointing to our sip1 and sip2 proxies.

The easy option

This is the quickest route if you do not want to manage DNS yourself.
